ARH 261 Survey of Western Art II

This course is an introductory survey of Western art and architectural history from the Renaissance to ca. 1980. The course is intended to provide a historical understanding of the major artistic movements within the Western visual tradition (which we will problematize), and to encourage students to develop a literate and critical eye. Our objectives for this course are: 1) to be comfortable with art historical vocabulary: how do we talk about images?; 2) to understand methods of visual analysis: how do we make meaning from images?; and 3) to further our critical (analytical) reading, writing, and speaking skills: how do we communicate what we think and learn about images?
