LAT 229 Roman Comedy: Humor in Ancient Rome

This course will focus on one or two plays by Plautus and/or Terence with an emphasis on language (these are the earliest complete works in Latin, dating from ca. 200-160 BCE) and performance. We will discuss typical characters (such as miserly pimps, clever slaves, pretentious soldiers, and more), the comic plot, and the great influence these authors had on later European comedy (especially Shakespeare and Moliere).
