Appendix U: Children and Safety in the Workplace

Children and Safety in the Workplace

Because a College employee must attend to their work duties during working hours and because it can pose a safety risk to have children in the workplace, employees should not use the workplace as a substitute for childcare.  If the employee’s supervisor gives approval, an employee’s children may be present in the workplace, but the employee must supervise them, or be sure they are appropriately supervised.  Minor children of employees are not supposed to be on their own on campus. The employee must be sure that the presence of the child is not disrupting that employee’s work or the work of other employees, and that their presence is not creating a dangerous situation or safety risk in the workplace.  Supervisors should address situations to minimize disruption of the workplace and to promote safety.  Employees in remote work arrangements must abide by the provisions in the remote work agreement pertaining to childcare during work hours.
