Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)

Located on the lower level of Crounse (phone extension 5288), the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) provides a variety of instructional supports and academic technology services.

CTL staff members are available for confidential meetings with individual Faculty or programs on any aspect of teaching and learning. They are also available for formative class observations and midterm course evaluations. The CTL organizes and sponsors a variety of teaching and learning events and groups throughout the year as well, including specialized workshops, Faculty Learning Communities, Pedagogy Luncheons, and New Faculty Orientation. Resources for course innovation and travel to pedagogical meetings are also available through the CTL. Please visit the CTL web page for more information.

Support for community based learning (CBL) is located within the CTL.  CBL is a pedagogical approach that intentionally links what is being taught in the classroom to the surrounding communities.  CBL is grounded in the belief that all communities have educational assets and resources that can enhance learning experiences for students.  CTL staff are available to help design courses to integrate CBL effectively, design reflective assignments, or connect with community partners.  For more on the CBL experience, follow this link:  http://web.centre.edu/ctl/community-based-learning.html.

The CTL also supports instructional and academic technology needs. Staff members are available to: help Faculty create, employ, and assess technology-rich assignments; conduct mini-courses to students about the equipment and software needed to complete technology-rich assignments; work with students in the media lab throughout the duration of a technology-rich assignment; provide videoconferencing support; assist with the effective use of academic technologies, including Moodle; and provide troubleshooting and training assistance on select software, including Microsoft Office and Qualtrics. Special services, such as videography of a classroom or guest speaker, should also be requested through CTL. These requests should be made online at http://ctl.centre.edu.

CTL facilities and resources include a specialized computing lab designed for high end media editing and digitization, a theater-style auditorium seating 170 and equipped for viewing films and computer-based presentations, a collection of teaching and learning related resources, and staff offices. The CTL also manages an inventory of electronic and computing equipment available for checkout by Centre community members (laptops, projectors, digital voice recorders, digital cameras, etc). The complete list of available equipment and associated reservation and request calendar can be found online at http://ctl.centre.edu.
