Student Government President Letter

Greetings Centre Community:

Welcome to the 2020-2021 academic year at Centre College. I am honored and excited to serve you in this chapter of your Centre experience. Some are just beginning their adventure, and others are drawing their time at Centre to a close.

This fall will look different for all involved in the Centre community. Faculty, staff, and students will have to adapt to the challenges that COVID-19 has presented. It’s important to recognize the variety of experiences and unique circumstances that we’ve all had with COVID-19. For those students who return to campus, it is incumbent upon us that we protect ourselves, our peers, our College community, and the broader Danville-Boyle Co. community. Following state, municipal, and College policies will serve to protect people and allow for a healthy, safe semester.

Regardless of whether you complete your studies at home or on campus, Centre remains committed to its strong academic program. Centre’s renowned faculty continue to be dedicated to the success of their students; that dedication extends to students all around the globe, not just in Danville. A commitment to a liberal arts and sciences education is not an easy one, but it is a commitment that will create opportunities, bring about change, and establish a base for success.

This base in liberal arts allows Centre to grow as an institution as we continue into our third century with our 21st College President. As you move through your time at Centre, think of what you wish to see from the institution. You will be challenged and learn about yourself, as well as your major. Both of these processes will be difficult and require critical thinking, but you, our campus community, and the world will be better for it.

The Student Government Association (SGA) is an important part of your Centre experience, whether a first-year or a senior. It is one of the best ways to make your voice heard. SGA will advocate on behalf of all students, and I encourage you to get involved by participating in elections and using numerous outlets to contact those representing you. It is up to each of us to make Centre into a place that we can cherish and where we can learn.

As the year begins, many are anxious about what the future holds. As the semester continues, new questions will emerge about the College, about society, and about how we enter the world. When these questions come up, we will, as a community, work through them and move on to the next one. Nevertheless, welcome to another year at one of the premier liberal arts and science institutions! Cherish every moment but remember to do so safely. Best wishes for the academic year and beyond!
