Lab Evaluation Form

Lab evaluations give you the opportunity to express views about a lab and the way it was taught. The college administration may use your responses to evaluate your instructor’s teaching; your instructor may also use your responses to guide improvement. Both tenured and untenured faculty members are evaluated, and so it is important that you answer thoroughly and honestly. Please be specific in your answers and give examples where possible, answering all questions. Thank you.

1.  Experimental design, data collection (including learning the necessary techniques), and analysis of data are central elements of science, but not every lab course, or laboratory exercise, is designed to cover all of these elements. Which of these central elements did you learn about this semester? Did the lab improve your skills in these areas? Please give examples where appropriate.

2.  This lab improved my skills in experimental design:

_____Strongly agree _____Agree _____Neutral _____Disagree _____Strongly disagree
_____This is not a goal of this laboratory section or course

    3. This lab improved my skills in data collection:

_____Strongly agree _____Agree _____Neutral _____Disagree _____Strongly disagree

_____This is not a goal of this laboratory section or course

    4. This lab improved my skills in data analysis

_____Strongly agree _____Agree _____Neutral _____Disagree _____Strongly disagree

_____This is not a goal of this laboratory section or course

    5.  Did this lab coordinate well with the accompanying “lecture” part of the course? (Note: some lab courses are not linked to a lecture, but are instead separate courses. In other labs, coordination with the lecture is not a goal. If this is the case for your lab, check “this is not a goal of this laboratory section or course” in the next question).

    6. This lab was well-coordinated with the lecture part of the course:

_____Strongly agree _____Agree _____Neutral _____Disagree _____Strongly disagree

_____This is not a goal of this laboratory section or course

    7. What is your carefully considered judgment of the instructor’s effectiveness in the laboratory? Note such things as command of subject, clarity, and preparedness.

    8. The instructor was generally effective:

    _____Strongly agree _____

    Agree _____Neutral _____Disagree _____Strongly disagree

    9. Was the instructor helpful and interactive in the lab?

    10. The instructor was generally helpful and interactive:

_____Strongly agree _____Agree _____Neutral _____Disagree _____Strongly disagree

    11. Comment on how well organized the lab section/course was, and how clearly the instructor                communicated objectives, expectations, and grading policies.

    12. The objectives, expectations, and grading policies were clearly stated and consistently implemented:

_____Strongly agree _____Agree _____Neutral _____Disagree _____Strongly disagree

    13. The instructor returned work to you in time to provide beneficial feedback:

_____Strongly agree _____Agree _____Neutral _____Disagree _____Strongly disagree

    14. You enrolled in this course because it is:

_____A general requirement _____A major requirement _____A minor requirement

    _____An elective

    15. In your opinion, the workload in this lab (in relation to other labs of equal level) is:

_____Much lighter _____Lighter _____Neutral _____Heavier _____Much heavier

    16. What special opportunities were offered in this lab (opportunities to design your own experiment, field trips, oral presentations, paper conferences, etc.)?

    17. What changes to the lab would make it a better experience?

    18. General comments
