I. Introduction

  1. General Policy

It is expected that all research conducted at Centre College will be carried out with integrity, consistent with the research ethics of the field in which it is conducted. Reports of suspected research misconduct should be made to the Academic Dean, who serves as the College’s Research Integrity Officer. In all cases, College policies and procedures will protect the confidentiality of both the individual who makes the allegation and the individual accused of misconduct.

  2. Scope

The policy elaborated on below and the associated procedures apply to all individuals at Centre College engaged in research. This policy applies to any person paid by, under the control of, or affiliated with the institution, such as researchers, trainees, technicians and other staff members, students, fellows, guest researchers, or collaborators who are engaged with research, research-training, or research-related grants or cooperative agreements with Centre College.

Many of the procedures herein reflect policies of the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) 42 CFR Part 50, Subpart A, and the footnotes throughout this document refer to this regulation.

The policy and associated procedures will normally be followed when an allegation of possible misconduct in research is received by an institutional official. Particular circumstances in an individual case may dictate variation from the normal procedure deemed in the best interests of Centre College. Any change from normal procedures also must ensure fair treatment to the subject of the inquiry or investigation. Any significant variation should be approved in advance by the Academic Dean of Centre College.
