ANT 451 Ancient Maya Culture

This course explores the multifaceted identity of the ancient Maya, examining how their tangible artifacts, displayed in museums, and the remains of their cities afford us a window into their world. We’ll trace their lineage to the initial wave of settlers in the region, the advent of settled life, the rise of hierarchical societies, and the intricate interplay between their environment and the shaping of their landscape. We will dissect the attributes of their city-states, their interactions with neighboring peoples, the phenomena labeled as their 'collapse,' and the repercussions of the encounter with Europeans. By understanding the Maya's relationship with their surroundings, we can gain deeper insight into their strategies for subsistence, resilience, and sustainability over centuries.
