GER 390 Culture and Media in Modern Berlin

This advanced German course helps students develop an overview of current issues and themes within the cultural landscape of Berlin, as a city, as part of Germany, and as a global capital since 2010. We address questions, such as: What are the social, political, urban, and artistic scenes in Berlin today? What was the position of Berlin historically, and what is the position of Berlin as a city in unified Europe today? These questions occupy contemporary German authors, filmmakers, journalists, musicians, and artists, as Berliners seek to reconcile the city’s past(s) with its potential futures as a global center, a locus of vibrant artistic activity, and as a multicultural society. Prerequisite: GER 220 or placement.
