Despite Cuba being one of the United States’ nearest neighbors, more than half a century of strained diplomatic relations between the two countries has created an air of mystery and intrigue around the island nation for many U.S. citizens. From its status as a communist country to its vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, Cuba is recapturing the interest and imaginations of the world in the twenty-first century as the U.S. government reduces trade and travel restrictions. This course explores the history of Cuba in global and regional contexts including units on the origins of Cuban society and culture, the country’s relationship with the United States before the Revolution of 1959, life under the Revolutionary regime, and the recent diplomatic changes between Cuba and the U.S.
