HIS 472 Boundaries of Citizenship

What is a citizen? When does an individual become a citizen? How are the criteria for citizenship determined? Who decides? This course interrogates these and other questions by exploring citizenship throughout history. Course readings will examine citizenship alongside topics such as immigration and naturalization, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, national borders and the environment, and globalism. Excursions to museums and other historic sites and attendance at artistic performances will complement course themes.
