MUS 232 Music History, Form and Analysis

The class is a one-semester examination of the most prominent composers and compositions of the common-practice of classical (art) music. The course begins with the high Baroque, examining Handel and Bach, moves onto the Viennese School of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and ends with Romanticism, beginning with Schubert, and ending with Brahms. Considerations will include biographical and cultural/societal contextualization. Furthermore, the most important pieces will be analyzed in depth, affording the students an introduction to the prominent forms of the common-practice era.
