SPA 361 Childhood in Latin America

Through readings, lectures, and films, this course explores childhood in contemporary Latin America. Among other factors it considers how nationalism, education, migration, gender, race and class impact children. The course uses Latin American children’s literature, contemporary essay, film, and photography as references for practicing analytical skills and expression in Spanish. Students read, view and analyze film, short stories and poetry by Latin American and Latino authors and directors that focus on children. Students present their own findings about one or more cultural aspects of childhood in Latin America.
