EDU 320 Education and Incarceration

This course will investigate the relationship between education and incarceration. Specifically, in this course we will focus on three primary themes: the school to prison pipeline; the educational effects on a child of having an incarcerated parent; and education programs that take place within prisons. Throughout the course, we will explore how education can be used to help disrupt cycles of incarceration and punishment. To this end, we will spend half of our course meeting time at nearby Northpoint prison, where we will read and discuss bell hooks’ book “Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope” side-by-side with inmates.
