FYS 157 Canada, the U.S., and Kentucky

Did you know that over 112,000 job across Kentucky depend on direct investment from Canada? Or that Kentucky exports $7.5 billion worth of goods and services to Canada each year? Learn more about the Canada-U.S. cross-border relationship and how it affects Kentucky. The course will take stock of Canada-U.S. relations from their genesis to the present, placing a special emphasis on how the relationship has evolved since the creation of the Canada United States Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA) in 1988. Students will have an opportunity to interact with leaders in the state’s trade community and learn about how the proposed United States – Mexico – Canada (USMCA) stands to affect the state economy. The term will culminate with a field trip to Indianapolis to see the Tony Award-winning musical Come From Away, which tells the story of how the small town of Gander, Newfoundland played host to some 7,000 stranded travelers in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
