LAT 318 Intermediate/Advanced Latin: Caesar's Rome

We explore the fascinating history of the late Roman Republic through investigating Julius Caesar’s rise and fall. We will read his own harrowing accounts of his merciless invasion of Northern Europe in Bellum Gallicum and his march on Rome in Bellum Civile, along with selections from Caesar’s contemporaries. These texts raise complex questions about the validity of Rome’s (and Caesar’s) actions in this crucial historical moment. Prerequisite: two semester of 200-level Latin courses or placement in 300-level Latin at entrance.
