SOC 330 Inequality and Power

This is really the subject matter of the course. The core text, Grusky and Szelenyi’s The Inequality Reader: Contemporary and Foundational Readings in Race, Class, and Gender brings together important sociological work on difference and equity. There are extensive readings on poverty, both as analyzed and experienced. Equally rich sections are devoted to racial inequality and gender inequality. Most of the work concerns the United States, but a large section considers inequality and exclusion in relation to globalization. Finally, the text gives rich material to discuss “what is to be done,” at both the personal and policy level.
