SOC 385 Sustainable Communities

What is sustainability? Our best attempts to live sustainably are often thwarted because we have difficulty figuring out what being green really entails. This course has two objectives. The first is to learn about the history of sustainability and its usefulness as an organizing principle for communities. The second is to apply our knowledge toward developing a sustainability plan for our own communities (neighborhood, work, school, city, town, region). Students complete experiential learning exercises toward these goals. By the end of the course, students will have a better understanding of what sustainability means in their own life, the contemporary United States, and an increasingly global world.
