CHN 440 Advanced Business & Professional Chinese II

This course, cross-listed with CHN 340, continues the development of advanced-level professional Chinese with an emphasis on strategic communication, critical analysis, and independent project work. Designed for heritage learners and students with advanced proficiency, it expands upon the skills introduced in CHN 430 through more complex, real-world applications.

Students will engage in tasks such as drafting business proposals and contracts, conducting negotiations, and developing professional digital content (e.g., websites or presentations), while demonstrating a high level of linguistic precision and cultural competence. In contrast to CHN 340, students will undertake substantial individualized projects—such as industry-focused research, entrepreneurial plans, or professional simulations—that require sustained use of advanced Chinese in both written and oral forms.

The course further deepens students’ understanding of professional norms, rhetorical strategies, and socio-cultural dynamics in Chinese-speaking business contexts.

Target proficiency: Advanced Mid to Advanced High.
