Hardware Recommendations

Centre College recommends a PC running the latest Windows OS or a Mac computer running the latest version of OSX.  Note:  Mac OS 10.8 and older and Windows XP and older are not permitted for use on the College’s network and are not supported.

A computer using the campus network should have at least 4.0 GB of Random Access Memory (RAM) and a hard drive with at least 120 GB of storage. Memory requirements will increase over time and students purchasing new computers should consider machines with more RAM (8.0 GB or more is suggested, along with the ability to upgrade) and larger capacity hard drives.

In order to connect to the campus network, a computer must have a wireless (Wi-Fi) adaptor. All new laptops should have one preinstalled and it is an option to add a wireless adaptor when purchasing most new desktop units.  A USB wireless adaptor is also an option for desktop units.  It is the responsibility of the student to ensure this functionality exists.

The College is not responsible for repair of hardware failure (CPU, keyboard, monitor, memory, drives, gaming systems, etc.) of student computers and cannot provide assistance with these matters. Therefore, it is important to fully understand any warranties that come with the purchase of a new computer. ITS recommends purchasing a 3 year, or longer, manufacturer’s warranty.

Laptop Users: It is strongly recommended that you purchase a HDMI adapter for any laptop if it does not already contain one. Using one’s laptop for class presentations will require this adapter.
